I wanted to create a piece of art for one of my favorite Dungeons & Dragons character, Marble. She is a tiefling warlock who made a terrible deal with a devil to save the people she cares about. When she was unable to uphold her end of the bargain, she was turned to stone as punishment, and remained as such for several decades. In that time, nature slowly started to retake her.
For this render, I wanted to capture the eerie vibe of finding a lost treasure in the forest. The only asset I began with was her model (which was created on HeroForge for our gameplay). After that, I had to build the environment from scratch. I modeled the leaves, built geometry node trees to customize their placements on her mesh, developed a shader that renders the look of chipped stone, and played with environment values to sell the “foggy woods” vibe.
